Mexico have almost secured qualification for the World Cup after a 1-0 away win over Honduras on Sunday.
Costa Rica’s 2-1 victory over El Salvador earlier in the day meant that Mexico could not immediately join Canada and secure their place in Qatar, but victory away from home means that El Tri is on the brink.
With the three best CONCACAF teams qualifying automatically, Mexico sits in third place three points ahead of Costa Rica and has an advantage of four goals, meaning that only a defeat at home to El Salvador on Wednesday and a significant fluctuation in goals will put Tata Martino’s men in trouble.
Mexico had 70 percent ball possession in the first half against Honduras, but failed to create any clear opportunities.
They increased the intensity after the break, with Hector Herrera, Jesus Corona and Hirving Lozano all creating chances in the first 10 minutes.
Edson Alvarez finally found the breakthrough in the 70th minute and headed in from Herrera’s corner.
As Costa Rica play in second place in the United States in their last qualifying match, even a draw against El Salvador will lead Mexico through to their eighth World Cup in a row.
