Harry Maguire has not shown enough “consistency” this season due to “small mistakes” with big consequences, according to Rio Ferdinand.
It has been a turbulent season for Manchester United captain Harry Maguire. He has been in the spotlight for a number of mistakes. When the club’s form has been overwhelming, fingers have been pointed with the blame on senior players as the defender.
Maguire has faced its fair share of criticism, which continued after United’s 1-1 draw against Burnley on Tuesday.
Several lost points meant United slipped out of the top four even though they have a match in hand over the nearest club they are trying to capture.
But if they miss the Champions League, there will be plenty of relegation. From what’s left of the season, they have to iron out mistakes to prevent that from happening.
But such mistakes happen all too often – and their captain has regularly been a guilty party.
After a draw with Burnley, Maguire was again questioned by former United defender Ferdinand, who highlighted what he could have done better for the goal they conceded.
Ferdinand told BT Sport (via Mirror): “This comes from Man Utd’s attack. Two or three of them lie down, play forward and run forward. It’s about feet, the bit of skill is beautiful; can it be prevented? ”
“There is [Scott] McTominay, he’s your protection. All he has to do, Maguire, is keep pushing him away. He does not have to overcommit; as soon as he overcommits, it’s an amazing piece of skill, this pass is sublime. If Kevin de Bruyne does [Wout Weghorst pass] we’re all going crazy. “
Ferdinand continued his analysis: “This touch across Maguire takes him completely out of it. I do not think Maguire is fast enough to have gotten there to influence that situation once it has gone beyond him.
“It’s about stopping it at the source. When he has the big number nine, keep him facing [away from] the goal. He has McTominay’s safety ahead of him, he can handle him a little. It is small mistakes that lead to big moments. ”
Too many bad excursions from Harry Maguire
Man Utd as a club has been inconsistent all season. In fact, they have only won back-to-back matches on three occasions.
Their current race is the fourth time they have gone two games in a row without a win. And Maguire is considered to be one of their least consistent artists.
Ferdinand acknowledged this theory and suggested that it could have come as a consequence of his summer efforts with England at the 2020 European Championships.
That said, he should “delete” bad performances like this – where he could even have been sent off.
The expert said: “This season you have seen it [too many below-par performances].
“I’m not sure if it’s a hangover from the European Championships physically and mentally, I’m not sure. There has not been the consistency as a player you would expect from that stature.
“Behind closed doors, he will take responsibility for it. He does not have to come out here and get crazy and he will iron it out.
“The challenge he made just over the halfway line, he’s lucky to stay on the pitch because I feel the striker is running into goal. It’s an achievement he wants to erase and get into the next game as soon as possible. But these things are happening. “
