Son Heung-min notched the match’s only goal of his 200th Premier League appearance for Tottenham as Spurs saw Watford 1-0 to go to the top.

Tottenham was elated by the fact that Harry Kane returned to the eleven starting matches. When Man City pursued the English captain for at least January, Kane took his usual place at the forefront of Spurs’ front line.

Tottenham collected large amounts of possession in the beginning, but found Watford stubborn opponents to collapse. Oliver Skipp controlled the ball in the middle, putting his team up by another goal.

Winger Ismaila Sarr was predicted to be Watford’s biggest attacking sale before kick-off. After 15 minutes, a couple of quick and successful challenges followed by a shot from just outside the penalty area by Dele Alli might have resulted in another goal for Hugo Lloris.

The unlikely figure of Japhet Tanganga saw a glorious opportunity to break the stalemate and then beg. After Watford had failed to clear their lines in a corner, the provisional right-back stabbed a goalkeeper from close range who got a superb stop from Daniel Bachmann.

With 42 minutes played, the home side managed to get a 1 – 0 lead as Son Heung-min flipped the ball in after a cross from the right.

The South Korean whipped a teasing free kick won by Steven Bergwijn into the uncertainty corridor. Bachmann did not know if he should stick or twist as the ball sailed untouched into the far corner of the net.

Kane had been kept relatively quiet for much of the competition, though he received a yellow card in stoppage time for a lung on Sarr.

Craig Cathcart seemed to suffer a setback shortly after the break. Hornets manager Xisco called on Jeremy Ngakia to replace the injured defender.

Watford saw two fantastic opportunities to restore parity and began begging shortly after through Juraj Kucka and Sarr. Kucka watched his strike sail harmlessly over the crossbar before Joshua King got in Sarr’s way of preventing Lloris from being truly tested.

Spurs struggled to break down a well-organized Watford backline as they pushed forward. But with half an hour left, they led 1-0 for the third time in three Premier League matches this season.

A sweeping counter could have remedied any lingering nerves, but Alli could not complete the move that included Kane and Son.

Tottenham looked dangerous on the counter as the visitors pushed in search of an equalizer. Substitute Lucas Moura earned a corner kick after freeing a violent drive that stuck Bachmann’s palms.

Bachmann produced a superb stop to deny Kane late, but that did not matter as Tottenham won for the third consecutive league match to go to the top.
