In addition to questioning the forward’s decision, he has defended Clement Lenglet amid harsh criticism
Jeremy Mathieu believes that Antoine Griezmann made a mistake by leaving Atlético de Madrid to join Barcelona.
Griezmann moved to Barça in the summer of 2019, but since then he has struggled to show the form he produced at Atlético on a consistent basis.
He has had decent streaks this season, but Barça as a whole are struggling to make their mark and Mathieu feels it was a mistake by his French compatriot to swap Wanda Metropolitano for Camp Nou.
What was said?
“Griezmann is not at the level of Atlético,” said Mathieu RAC1. “Personally, in my opinion, it is a mistake that I came to Barcelona.
“At Atlético he was a very important piece and I don’t know if he has that importance at Barcelona.”
Mathieu supports Lenglet
Clement Lenglet received harsh criticism after conceding a late penalty against Cádiz on Sunday that cost Barça two points, and the French defender reportedly left the ground in tears.
Mathieu had a hard time in his three seasons at Barça, and can understand what his French compatriot is going through.
“I had a really bad time in my last year with Barcelona,” said Mathieu. “I felt that defeat in Turin [in the Champions League against Juventus] It was my fault.
“But I don’t understand why they went after me, since there are 11 players on a soccer team.
“I felt alone in the locker room. No one offered support. For me, that is not football.
“Everybody is killing Lenglet now, and I know what that is. He has to try to be positive and turn it around, and do the best he can.”
A great fortnight ahead for Barça
Sevilla’s 2-0 win at Osasuna on Monday allowed them to overtake Barça and move to third place in the league standings.
Barça are eight points behind leaders Atlético de Madrid and have away games in Elche and Osasuna on either side of a meeting with Sevilla in La Liga.
The Catalans also face Sevilla in the Copa del Rey, with all those games prior to a meeting with Paris Saint-Germain, where they will have to overcome a 4-1 disadvantage in the first leg if they want to continue in the Champions League.
