Erling Haaland does not play for Borussia Dortmund against Rangers at Ibrox, but the guests still believe that they can turn their Europa League match around – and with good reason.

Superstar striker Haaland has been out with a muscle injury in the past month after scoring four goals in four games in all tournaments to start 2022.

But Dortmund are still in that spirit without their talisman and have scored 25 times in eight games this calendar year – just behind Real Betis (29) across Europe’s top five leagues heading into midweek matches.

This rate of 3.2 goals scored per. match is also improved by only one team, meanwhile, in Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen (3.3).

Keeping opponents out at the other end has been a problem for Dortmund, where five of Leverkusen’s 20 goals came out of BVB. A similarly deficient defensive display in the first part of their playoff round in the knockout round gave the Rangers 4-2 away wins.

Again, only Betis (42) has had more goals for and against in total in 2022 than Dortmund (41).

And Betis provide the inspiration for Dortmund, as the only team to have thrown a two-goal lead away from home to leave the Europa League, making it against rivals Sevilla in 2013-14.

Instead of worrying about Haaland’s absence, head coach Marco Rose is focused on ensuring his backline is ready for the task at Glasgow, giving BVB the platform to fire through.

“Erling has been out for almost half of the season. Nevertheless, we scored a lot of goals, “Rose said at her pre-match press conference.

“Tomorrow we have to attack, go for goals. Of course you can always slip in [at the other end]. Therefore, we must be careful.

“We have to find better solutions in the future than in the first match. Mod Gladbach [a 6-0 Bundesliga win]it was a good first step. ”

About the healthy Haaland, Rose added: “There is always a lot of reporting about Erling. He needs a little more time. He is still some distance away from 100 per cent.

“We are in touch, he keeps trying and keeps working. He still needs some time. He must be pain free – and we are not there yet.”
