Goalkeepers who started out as outfield players

Very few things in life can bring as much joy as watching a goalkeeper lumber onto the field for a corner during the later stages of the game with his team desperately searching for a draw.

The awkwardness of the gloved person trying to fight for a headline, and the hope and possibility that maybe, just maybe, they might be responsible for delivering Hollywood’s dramatic and romantic ending. And then the corner fails to beat the first man and the goalkeeper has to sneak back to where he belongs.

But for some goalkeepers, stretching their legs higher up the field is more natural than others, with a selection of studs spending their youth as outfield players.

Let’s take a look at those goalkeepers.

Caoimhin Kelleher

Liverpool’s stopper shone on his Champions League debut, scoring a selection of good saves, but it was his skill with the ball at his feet that Jurgen Klopp cited as the reason Kelleher had been preferred over Adrian.

This ability to play ball is not surprising given that the 22-year-old was a field player for much of his youth.

Kelleher started out as a center forward, playing at the county level as a forward before trading scoring goals to keep them out in the middle of a season at the U14 level after a request from his father. Dad knows better.

If an individual is to be Alisson’s substitute goalkeeper again at Liverpool, it is now mandatory that they have spent part of their youth playing in the outfield. Why do you think Andy Lonergan was For real released?

Adrián played as a forward on CD Altair de España until he was 10 years old. He temporarily came between the sticks as a ‘break’ when his team had no goalkeeper. This temporary strike has lasted 23 years.

A year after playing in goal, Adrián was discovered by Betis.

If you’ve seen him in the Head and Shoulders commercials or playing cricket at Tottenham training ground, you already know that Joe Hart is a man of many talents.

Hart was first selected for his local Shrewsbury team when he was 10 years old, but chose to continue playing the Sunday league. The played in the outfield for his school and Sunday side, and in his county gatehouse before permanently donning the gloves when he joined Shrewsbury when he was 14. He had made the Shrews game day squad before his 16th birthday.

Imagine spending a portion of your teenage years playing up and down gardens in the Shropshire fields and still Pep Guardiola does not consider that his feet are good enough.

David De Gea

The Manchester United number one has spent a large part of his career being regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, but he started higher up the field.

His father, José, was a Getafe goalkeeper, and after a year of playing in the gardens of his club, the Atlético Casarrubuelos Soccer School, which were affiliated with Atlético de Madrid, De Gea had established that his favorite position was also among the sticks of age. of seven.

However, De Gea continued to play as a forward on his school’s team until he was 14 years old, with his ex professor citing the fact that he frequently played in the outfield in futsal as the reason for his great ability to play with the ball.

Thibaut Courtois has protected the goal of four league-title winning teams, but it was not the first position he held when he began his football career.

Courtois started as a left back for local team Bilzen VV, and was selected for Genk while playing fullback.

The Belgian number one tested for the first time in goal during a tournament below the level of nine. He impressed, but continued to play regularly in the outfield until he was 12 for fear of being restricted to one position.

Jose Manuel Pinto

The former Barcelona number two took home seven major trophies during his time in Catalonia while playing on Víctor Valdés ‘second violin, but he could have been playing Sergio Busquets’ second violin if things had turned out a little differently.

Pinto started out as a defensive midfielder before joining Betis’s youth system in his teens.

His abilities are not limited only to the goal and the shield of the four behind; Pinto now works as a record producer and hip hop musician, a company he was involved with during his playing days.

Jorge Campos Mexico

Footballers like Jorge Campos don’t come very often. Renowned for his multi-colored goalie jerseys designed by himself and his tendency to move forward whenever his side was behind, the 5-foot-9-inch plug was eccentric to say the least.

But the fact that Campos launched himself to the top was not an absurdity of David James, Stuart Pearce, Manchester City against Middlesbrough. It was a genuine and smart tactic.

The centurion from Mexico played as a striker during his teens before becoming a goalkeeper. However, when he found himself behind Adolfo Ríos in the pecking order at Pumas when he was 22, Campos asked to be deployed as a forward to have more minutes. He scored 14 goals in his first season up front!

Campos eventually earned the number one spot, but would still be regularly deployed as a forward whenever his team chased after a game. He finished his career with 46 professional goals. Imagine if Stuart Pearce had had Campos at his disposal. Manchester City would not have needed Sheikh Mansour’s millions.
