Gerrard laments that Aston Villa’s characteristics disappear after the Brentford defeat

Steven Gerrard said there were not many positive things to take for Aston Villa from their defeat to Brentford, where he did not see the same characteristics that his side showed earlier in his reign.

Gerrard suffered his fourth defeat as Villa boss on Sunday. Where the previous three had come to the title challengers Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, this was against a team they would have expected to beat.

But Brentford came back to win 2-1 and subsequently jumped Villa into the Premier League table.

Danny Ings scored the opening for Gerrard’s team before Yoane Wissa and Mads Roerslev turned things around for Brentford on both sides of the break.

Villa had better of practically all the stats except the one that really counts.

However, Gerrard could not take positive things away after complaining about the mistakes they made.

“I could not believe we were right at the break because the performance was really strong,” Gerrard said.

“It seemed to be a question of when the second goal should come. In the second half we had a lot of ball possession, we created chances, but I’m really disappointed with how we conceded the second goal. It’s a catalog of errors.

“When I first got into this job, we got some positive, strong results because there was a lot of gravel and people put their bodies at risk. I did not see that for the second goal.

“They have had three good attacks today and scored two goals. It is not good enough from our point of view.”

‘Should never have lost’

Gerrard did not want to fall back on excuses – like the absence of Tyrone Mings and Ollie Watkins – to justify the result. Instead, he called for more aggression from those on the field.

“We had four or five people who were not available for various reasons and you are going to miss their qualities. They are great players for this club,” he said.

“But I thought we had enough quality to win this match. We should never have lost that match.

“I do not want to sit here and say that there are many positive things today because there are not. We lost the match. We have to be more aggressive and harder to play against.”

Gerrard gives Tuanzebe transfer update

One player who was not involved with Villa was Axel Tuanzebe, who has been the subject of transfer interest from Naples.

The defender, who is currently on loan from Manchester United, has not played much since Gerrard replaced Dean Smith.

Napoli need a new central defender after releasing Kostas Manolas. They want to cancel Tuanzebe’s loan with Villa to take him to Italy for the rest of the season.

Gerrard revealed, however, that he would prefer to keep Tuanzebe until the end of his loan period. However, he admits that it is beyond his control.

“I want to keep the player until the end of the season at least,” the manager said.

“But this is a case of it being completely out of my hands. It’s in the hands of Axel, his representatives and Manchester United and we should know that by the end of the game today.”
