Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini blew up the “absolute confusion” of the refereeing performance in his team’s Europa League quarter-final exit to RB Leipzig on Thursday.

Dea had high hopes after their draw in the first match, but a Christopher Nkunku brace gave Leipzig a 2-0 victory instead, with the German team going through 3-1 overall.

With Atlanta down 1-0 on Thursday, however, Antonio Mateu Lahoz waved away what appeared to be a handball from Leipzig’s Dani Olmo, and also waved the ensuing call for a VAR review away.

Nkunku then punished Atalanta for the second time in the transfer, while Gasperini was left to lament the inconsistency in referee interpretation and decision-making with a draw in the balance.

‘The strange thing is that he [Mateu Lahoz] gave a punishment that to me was a less obvious mistake than it was a punishment. There is absolute confusion about handballs, ”he said. “The judge himself assesses in 30 seconds the first instance more seriously than the second, which is much clearer.

“Well, it’s not like you can cancel it [from context]. We had a good match, we engaged in something that is normal in these matches. There are target situations on both sides of Europe. Everyone has an important attack quality. It was not the defense that punished us. “
