FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga, – The 2021 season seemed very promising for fifth-year Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley, but it ended in tumult. His 2022 season is over before it started, the result of a years-long suspension that was imposed Monday by the NFL for gambling on their games.

Here is a timeline of events for the previous first round selection over the past 10 months:

May 3, 2021: The team took his fifth year opportunity and guaranteed Ridley $ 11.1 million for the 2022 season.

June 9, 2021: Falcons replaced receiver Julio Jones away, making Ridley the team’s best receiver, and it looked like he almost guaranteed he would get a long-term extension.

June 15, 2021: Ridley spoke to the media about his offseason foot surgery that kept him from working in the field during OTAs and minicamp.

July 29, 2021: Ridley declared his foot healthy in training camp, but did not participate in any preseason matches

August 4, 2021: A good day for training with her daughter.

Sept. 12: Ridley opened the season with five catches for 51 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Sept. 19: Ridley caught up with seven passes in 63 yards and his first touchdown of the season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

October 7, 2021: When the team got ready to go to London for a game against the New York Jets, Ridley refused to leave because of what he considered a personal problem.

October 18, 2021: Ridley returned to the team after the Falcons’ farewell week. During that week, he spoke to the media and said he felt his problem was short-sighted and that it was past him.

October 24, 2021: Ridley had four receptions on 26 yards and a touchdown on the Miami Dolphins. It turned out to be his last game of the season.

October 31, 2021: During the fourth quarter of Atlanta’s home loss to the Carolina Panthers, Ridley announced he was leaving the team indefinitely to work on his mental health. The Falcons supported Ridley throughout the second half of the season and often declined to comment other than to say they supported him.

November 5, 2021: The Falcons put Ridley on the list of injuries outside of football.

Later in November: Ridley’s bets cover five days a month and include parlays where he included the Falcons to win.

February 9: The Falcons were informed that the NFL was investigating Ridley for potential gambling at stake.

March 7: The NFL announced a suspension of at least one year for Ridley for betting on NFL games.
