Are the Houston Texans pursuing a former Chicago Bears head coach to take over after the brief David Culley era?
The Houston Texans are changing things up a bit and looking around for a new opportunity while looking for their next head coach.
According to Adam Schefter, the Texans have talked to Lovie Smith, their defensive coordinator and assistant head coach, about potentially stepping in and taking over as their new head coach.
Ian Rapoport shared that Smith has been interviewed
According to Tom Pelissero, the Texans no longer seem to be led by McCown, and the search has changed course a bit.
As Pelissero notes, McCown is apparently out of the game
Houston Texans Search for Head Coach: Texans reportedly want to interview Lovie Smith for a vacancy as head coach
That does not necessarily mean that Smith is the favorite, but it does mean that the Texans, for whatever reason, were not thrilled with how the search went. It seems that they will look in a new direction. At the very least, the Texans are expanding their search a bit.
Smith is not exactly the best option out there, but he is potentially better than some of the other options. Yes, it’s a pretty low bar that’s set. The Texans have apparently been very interested in Josh McCown, who has absolutely no meaningful coaching experience on his resume.
At this point, who knows what the Texans will do. This job search is as much a mess as the Texans are, and whoever steps in to become the next head coach will have to navigate everything that comes with working for a very strange franchise. At least Smith is already familiar with the people of Houston.
