Competence: League Two
Market: Forest Green Rovers win
Odd: 4/6 @ 888sport
In a battle royale between two eliminating teams at opposite ends of the League Two table, Forest Green will welcome Southend to the New Lawn on Wednesday night.
Starting with the hosts, who undoubtedly achieved another flashy victory on the road over the weekend, the mood at Forest Green camp should be very good. Sitting on pole position to secure an inaugural League One campaign this year, the Gloucestershire side scored a well-deserved 2-0 win at play-off contender Newport on Sunday lunchtime. Opening midweek games with a five-point margin to stay out of the automatic spots, Mark Cooper’s men have won each of their last three fourth-tier matchups on the rebound. Knowing they have a golden opportunity to extend their recent purple patch midweek, it should also be noted that Forest Green has amassed a hugely impressive 13 points in their last five League Two contests.
As for the visitors, while Forest Green could find itself with a firm mix in the pursuit of promotion, Southend is in a real battle to maintain its Football League status this year. Losing ground again over the weekend and striking out with a 1-0 loss to Bolton at Roots Hall, the Essex side have just one buffer point to slip back into the relegation zone. As it appears their surprising 1-0 win at Newport earlier in the month was just a minor rebound, the Shrimpers have won just one of their last eight League Two games, a streak that dates back to Jan.9. With that recent run highlighted by a dismal 5-1 at Port Vale last month, it should also be noted that Southend suffered a 1-0 loss when hosting Forest Green in November.
