Liverpool forward Sadio Mane says he will put the disappointment of last season behind him and score 30 goals this season.

The Senegal landscape has not found itself in good hands since signing for the Reds in 2016. In fact, he has scored 98 times in 221 matches and will no doubt soon hit a century of strikes. Last season, however, was – at its own admission – the worst campaign of his career so far.

He scored 16 goals and assisted nine others in 48 games and underwent his own setback as Liverpool’s form fell away.

Still, this summer showed its first chance in a long time to get a proper break. After playing 50 matches in 2018/19, he went straight to the Africa Cup of Nations and reached the final. As such, he did not have time off until the 2019/20 campaign began.

From there, Mane faced the same matches as everyone else in the Premier League as the final period began right after the break for the 2019/20 season.

Should he reach 30 goals, he would follow in Mohamed Salah’s footsteps. The Egyptian is the only Liverpool striker to reach the milestone since Mane, Salah and Roberto Firmino formed a trio in 2017.

“I want to score goals and create teammates, even to score 30 goals,” Mane told Liverpool’s match day program.

“Why not? The more the better as far as I am concerned and my ambition for the team is to win trophies. Everyone is hungry for it.

“I was so disappointed last season and passionate when I thought I could have done more.

“While I might have scored between 18 and 22 goals a season, that was no longer the case on that occasion, so I would obviously be disappointed.”

Last season proved to be Liverpool’s first without a trophy in three seasons.

After their Champions League triumph in 2019, they won the Premier League title in 2020 by 99 points. Mane, however, admitted concern that such achievements are now a thing of the past.

In fact, the focus has quickly turned to the teams around them strengthening their ranks. Chelsea have signed Romelu Lukaku again, while Manchester United have bought Jadon Sancho.

Mane wants more Liverpool history

“In football, things move on very quickly and people forget the past,” he said. “It’s a shame, but it’s how it is.

“People do not always talk about what we have won today, and there is no excuse for relaxing in pursuit of our goals.

“Of course, the experiences from last season have given us all even more motivation, and we are all really in the process of having a fantastic season this time. We were all very keen to get the season started. ”

Liverpool, meanwhile, have not added their ranks. They still have Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino as back-ups to their well-known front-three and Diogo Jota.

Who won the transfer window? Aston Villa? Man Utd? Daniel Levy? …
