The 18-year-old winger only made a brief appearance in the Europa League win, but could receive his first outing in the coming weeks.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Amad Diallo is close to making his first start for Manchester United after the winger made his substitute debut in a 4-0 win against Real Sociedad on Thursday.

The 18-year-old came to United from Atalanta in January and has been playing for the club’s affiliate while adjusting to his new surroundings.

Diallo was involved in the final seven minutes of the last 32 Europa League first leg matches against the Society after replacing Mason Greenwood and Solskjaer says he will be given a bigger role in the near future.

What has been said

“Every day he gets closer and closer to his minutes,” Solskjaer said. BT sport. “So we felt that towards the end when we were 3-0 up to go and let him enjoy his first 10 minutes with the club.”

He added to journalists at a press conference: “We will make a decision on [his first start] after Newcastle [on Sunday].

“He’s had a couple of games in the reserves and there are still some players on the bench who would want to start, of course, but Amad is getting closer and we’ll see how much playing time he will have.”

Following Sunday’s Premier League game against Newcastle, United will turn their attention to the second leg of the tie against Society.

Despite his comfortable lead, Solskjaer says he won’t have a completely different starting eleven.

He said: “No, we have to play one game at a time. Newcastle first, but we will bring out a strong team because it is about building momentum. We have been through a difficult period and I thought we meet tonight.”

“I thought the guys got that leg zipper back, so it was important to remove some players and still rotate the team. We will definitely rotate, but we won’t take it lightly.”

Praise to Fernandes and James

Bruno Fernandes scored twice for the Red Devils, while Daniel James, who scored one of the Portuguese midfielder’s goals, and Marcus Rashford were also on the roster.

“Dan has always been on my mind and always in contention, you can see his x-factor tonight, his work pace, his pace, running behind and I think he’s scored in the last three or four appearances now and he’s working every single days to improve His game. Delighted by him and he knows how much we value him, “said Solskjaer.

“[Fernandes] You always want to do next and next correctly and next to the best of your ability and that is a very good attribute to have that you never rest on your laurels.

“If he scores two, he wants three and if he has an assist, he wants another, he drives everyone, sometimes he drives too much and he wants to do too much. I thought that tonight he played his position very well, he was in the spaces we wanted from him and you can see how efficient it is. “
