The Carolina Panthers may be just desperate enough to push through on a trade for Deshaun Watson, according to a new report.
The Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson quarterback sagas have reached a solution. Could Deshaun Watson also find a new home soon?
There are still a bunch of quarterback-needy teams out there who could do well in Watson in the near future.
Such a team could be particularly motivated to make a deal: the Carolina Panthers.
Deshaun Watson Rumors: The Panthers have the Texans QB at the top of their wish list
“Acquiring superstar Deshaun Watson is No. 1 on the Panthers’ wish list, according to a source,” Jordan Schultz tweeted. “As we know, Deshaun has a no-trade clause – but the staff is under tremendous pressure from owner David Tepper after five consecutive seasons. Watson would represent an immediate improvement.”
There is little doubt that Watson would improve on Carolina as a quarterback, though his long break from playing should be a concern. He is more confident than any of the quarterbacks the team can get in the upcoming NFL Draft.
The two biggest problems with the prosecution of Watson have to do with his legal situation and his interest.
A grand jury is scheduled to hear evidence by the end of this week as the state decides whether to prosecute criminals. Their decision will affect Watson’s availability.
The second element is whether Watson is at all interested in coming to Carolina.
In a recent radio appearance, Jonathan Alexander from Charlotte Observer weighed in on rumors that Watson would not relinquish his no-trade clause to join the Panthers.
“The Panthers, those in the organization, have not heard whether Deshaun Watson prefers Carolina or not. They have not come that far in the discussions.”
For now, Carolina is in wait-and-see mode. The heat will really be on if or when Watson’s status becomes clearer as it relates to criminal charges and the 22 civil cases brought against him.
The Texans have consistently indicated that they expect a massive move to be persuaded to trade Watson. How desperate are the Panthers? We will see.
