Midfielder Ilaix Moriba has hinted at why he chose to sign for RB Leipzig despite getting on the radars of Tottenham and Chelsea.
The 18-year-old is one of Europe’s most valued talents. Barcelona were reluctant to part with the Spaniard, who has often drawn comparisons with Paul Pogba. However, his unwillingness to sign a new contract ensured an exit to the top of their agenda.
Several English clubs registered their interest over the summer, in particular Chelsea and Tottenham.
Spores were in the mix for Moriba until the last stages of the window. However, a switch to Bundesliga clothes RB Leipzig was eventually realized.
Leipzig reportedly left a first 16 million. € before additions, as Moriba signed a five-year deal until 2026. Given its unlimited potential, Barcelona insisted on a 10 per cent sale clause.
It came as a blow to the English suitors, although Spurs and Chelsea still secured deadline deals from La Liga.
Right back Emerson Royal arrived in north London from Barcelona. The Blues, meanwhile, were loaned out by Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez. The classic midfielder has since spoken of one Thomas Tuchel promised as a key factor behind his signature.
Signature Moriba would have rounded out a fantastic deadline day for the couple, but the teen star has since suggested why he chose Leipzig instead.
Speaking to theirs official website, Moriba specifically quoted the club’s philosophy of attack, insisting that Leipzig – which has a reputation for developing young talent – would be a perfect place to develop his career.
“I am very happy to be able to join RB Leipzig,” said Moriba. “It is a very exciting club that has always preferred to play attacking football, which suits me perfectly.
“I am convinced that Leipzig is the right place for me to take the next step in my career and continue my development, which was what informed my decision.
“Now my full focus is on settling in the club, within the team and the city in order to play the best possible as quickly as possible. We have big goals this season and I cannot wait to take up this challenge in Leipzig. ”
Leipzig boss Florian Schulz confirmed that Moriba had attracted a lot of interest from “top clubs in Europe”.
“We have been able to bring a unique talent to Ilaix Moriba,” Schulz added. “We are very proud that he has chosen RB Leipzig, despite many offers from several top clubs in Europe, and that we were able to quickly convince him of our philosophy.”
