One of Bayern’s oldest players could be leaving the club. Defender David Alaba has been linked to an estrangement from the European champions for several months, and Chelsea, Real Madrid and PSG are said to be interested.
According to the Daily MailBayern president Karl-Heinze Rummenigge has done his best to influence Alaba in the direction of staying in Munich, but the Austrian international wants to move on. His current contract expires next summer, but the 28-year-old will be able to speak with clubs in January.
Alaba has become a center-back in the last year due to the remarkable rise of young Alphonso Davies as a left back. However, he has done a good job in the position, helping the Bundesliga giants win quadruple last season.
Alaba is a versatile defender who can play pretty much anywhere on the baseline, which is certainly an attractive trait for would-be suitors. He also has extensive experience at the highest levels of European football, having won two Champions League trophies and nine Bundesliga titles during his time with the Bavarians.
At 28, he remains a valuable player for any team. So far, there have been no serious talks with Chelsea, PSG or Real Madrid, but Zinedine Zidane is reportedly a fan of the Austrian defender’s skills. Manchester United have also shown interest in recent weeks as they look to find more solidity on their own side.
The Blues have reinvented their bottom line this period with the newly formed partnership of Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma, but at 36, it is unknown how long the Brazilian will last at Stamford Bridge. Alaba could be a logical replacement for him next summer if he goes ahead.
It seems unlikely that you will see Alaba move elsewhere in January given that her contract expires next summer. But after almost 10 seasons with Bayern Munich, his time at the club seems to be coming to an end.
