‘Coutinho would be brilliant, but Liverpool don’t need him’: Barnes sees the scoring midfielder doing more harm than good

The Reds legend is not convinced that a goal threat from deep would help Jurgen Klopp’s cause, even though so much was expected of his three forwards.

Philippe Coutinho “would probably be brilliant” at Liverpool, says John Barnes, but the Reds legend is not convinced a scoring midfielder is needed at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been enduring unusual struggles in the final third of recent times, with just one goal recorded in their last three Premier League outings.

Only two points have accumulated from those matches, and the final product is running out for players like Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool have relied so heavily on their three forwards during a period of national dominance that any downfall of that unit hits the collective cause hard.

Goals have certainly not been spread enough in the 2020-21 campaign, with Takumi Minamino, Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones the only others to have scored more than once this period.

It could be argued that an additional threat from deep down, like the one once provided by Brazilian international Coutinho, would aid efforts in Merseyside, but Barnes is unconvinced.

He has said BonusCodeBets: “Well, when we had a Coutinho-style player, we finished 20 points off the top.

“So even though a Coutinho-style player can contribute goals, which would create a completely different style of play, as a result the three forwards would score less.

“Personally, I don’t think it works with a midfielder scoring goals when all three forwards want to keep scoring the same level of goals they used to do, as that is going to upset the balance.

“And Liverpool have managed to create a great balance and harmony between the players, so I would not recommend changing that soon.

“If Coutinho came back, he would probably be brilliant, but I don’t think the three forwards will score as many goals, or have the same impact, that a team like Liverpool needs.

“At the end of the day, balance is the most important thing for a team. And for the moment, the balance is perfect. “

Liverpool have returned to the top of the Premier League table without having a goal-scoring playmaker in their ranks, but the chasing group has drawn them in and Barnes looks forward to another exciting fight until the very end.

He added on the battle for national supremacy: “Although this season is much more unpredictable than the last, Manchester City are definitely Liverpool’s biggest threat.

“At the moment Man Utd can overtake us if they get a point, but I think over the course of the season, and of course we’re not halfway there yet, a lot can happen and I think it will end up being Liverpool and Man City. fighting.

“Liverpool continue to terrorize teams when they advance and they have that winning mentality very much in mind.

“And if you go to the bookmakers, they won’t tell you that Man Utd is the favorite. They are going to say that Liverpool and City are still the two favorites and, in my opinion, they are ”.
