If Eric Bieniemy and the Kansas City Chiefs go their separate ways, expect Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy to be at the front of the line to be their next offensive coordinator.
Eric Bieniemy may have trained his last game as the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, which opened the door for Matt Nagy’s return to Arrowhead.
Supposed friction between Bieniemy and starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes could lead to the departure of the offensive coordinator. Bieniemy does not have a new deal to come back to Chiefs. He keeps his options open as he could join another coaching staff, college or professional, or simply spend the year without football as a means of regrouping. That means Nagy can come back.
Nagy would be among the best candidates to replace Bieniemy as Chiefs offensive coordinator.
KC Chiefs: Could Matt Nagy replace Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator?
Since it’s so late in the offseason cycle, there’s not much the Chiefs can do to effectively replace Bieniemy as offensive coordinator if he and Kansas City separate. It would make sense to promote from within, but their internal top candidate in former quarterback coach Mike Kafka has jumped the city over to be the new offensive coordinator on Brian Daboll’s first New York Giants staff.
Another guy the Chiefs could look at is Kentucky Wildcats offensive coordinator Liam Coen. He comes from Sean McVay’s coaching staff. Coen quietly turned the Kentucky attack into one of the better passing attacks on arrival in Lexington. Although he has the potential to become a future head coach, it remains to be seen whether it will be at the college or pro level for him. He’s in a good place right now.
And that brings us back to Nagy. After failing as the former Chicago Bears head coach, Nagy could very well return to Kansas City and work with Andy Reid again. Before he got the Bears job, Reid was Nagy’s kingmaker who started training from their days with the Philadelphia Eagles. While Reid will probably call acting, Nagy’s familiarity with all things Chiefs is a huge boost.
In the end, it is never wise to reach into its past to solve a present or future problem. One could argue that this would be the case by bringing Nagy back into the fold. However, he is not the same coach he left Kansas City four years ago. He now has an Olympics with valuable head coach experience. If Bieniemy leaves, expect Nagy to be the first coach Reid calls.
To resolve instability, look for Chiefs to bring one of their own back to the coaching family.
