Saturday home on the couch wouldn’t be the same without the sweet tones of Jeff Stelling and Chris Kamara on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday.
The show has been on television screens for years, and Kamara in particular has provided some golden moments of comedy.
Yet the 62-year-old appears to be afraid of losing his job after the recent layoffs of fellow experts Matt Le Tissier, Phil Thompson and Charlie Nicholas.
“Jeff and I are not expendable, so we feel like our time will come. We are also getting older, “he said. Sun..
“This is young blood coming out.
“And there are people who think we were great a few years ago, but they probably think that we’ve done our time and we’re going to bring the youngsters. But if it all ended tomorrow at Sky, I can honestly say that they have been fantastic for me.
“To be with a company for 22 years, you don’t get the manager position for 22 years unless you’re Sir Alex or Arsene Wenger.”
While the need to appeal to a younger demographic is recognized, it would take a very brave, or some would say very stupid, broadcaster to change a winning formula.
There will come a time when things will come to a natural conclusion for both Stelling and Kamara, but there is still a long way to go.
As the old saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
