The Kansas City Chiefs caught some fans trading with Tyreek Hill, but the cap space they opened up could land them with Stephon Gilmore.
By swapping star wide receiver Tyreek Hill for the Dolphins, Chiefs GM Brett Veach essentially asked fans to trust him.
Not only did Kansas City get a lot of draft picks in the trade, but they cleared cap space to invest in other positions.
One of those positions is cornerback, where the team needs help after letting Charvarius Ward and Mike Hughes walk away in free play.
Chiefs could add Stephon Gilmore with Tyreek Hill cap space
According to Jordan Schultz, the space the Chiefs saved in the Hill trade could come in handy as the team pursues free agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore.
Gilmore was a Pro Bowler for the fifth time in six years last season despite playing only nine games due to injury.
The 31-year-old cornerback has a track record of success, though his recent injury history is a concern.
Spotrac shows Gilmore’s market value at $ 28 million over two years, averaging $ 14 million a year. Reports have suggested he is looking for something more than $ 15 million a year, so negotiations would still have to work out some details.
Still, it’s pretty clear the Chiefs can afford to pick up Gilmore if they want to.
Schultz also reported that KC is interested in dealing with Giants cornerback James Bradberry, so there are options on the table. The team just needs to figure out which scenario best suits their needs.
