Chelsea could reportedly save £ 80 million or more on the transfer market as they seek the signing of Bayern Munich star David Alaba.
The Austrian international is nearing the end of his contract with Bayern and it seems increasingly likely that he will leave the Allianz Arena with a free signing at the end of the season.
Chelsea are among the clubs strongly linked to Alaba, who have also been targeted by players such as Real Madrid and Liverpool, according to various reports.
The Blues, however, could now see Alaba as a bargain alternative to West Ham’s Declan Rice, according to the Daily Star.
Rice has long been linked to Chelsea after impressing with the Hammers, and is expected to charge a fee of at least £ 80 million in the near future, although one imagines his value could continue to rise.
However, Alaba can also play as a defensive and central midfielder, so Chelsea could now turn to him as a free signing next summer.
This could be a smart deal on the part of the West London giants, although some might argue that Rice would be a more valuable investment in the long run.
Rice is just 21 years old and surely has many of his best years ahead of him, while Alaba will be 29 next season and may have already peaked.
