Chelsea plans to keep young Callum Hudson-Odoi at Stamford Bridge this January, according to David Ornstein of Athletic.
Hudson-Odoi has been with Chelsea since 2007, making his professional debut for the club in January 2018 against Newcastle United after going through the youth ranks. The 20-year-old has made 73 appearances for the Blues, scoring 11 times in all competitions. This form has earned him three games with the English team.
However, the arrivals of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, as well as the season-ending form of Christian Pulisic, have limited the young Englishman’s playing time this season, starting only one league match so far.
But nevertheless, Athletic report that Chelsea are determined to keep the winger at Stamford Bridge ahead of the upcoming January transfer window, believing he has the potential to become a world-class player, as well as providing coverage for now.
Hudson-Odoi had previously been the subject of interest to Champions League champion Bayern Munich, with Sky sports reporting in October that the Bavarians had offered a loan deal with a £ 70 million purchase option. Their interest in the winger dates back to the summer of 2019, when they offered £ 30 million for their services.
Bayern Munich manager Hans-Dieter Flick confirmed his team hoped to sign the Englishman, labeling him “one of the best talents in his position” (via Cloud).
Hudson-Odoi tends to prefer to play as a left back, although he has also appeared on the right several times for Chelsea. Current Blues alternatives on the flanks are Christian Pulisic, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz and Mason Mount.
In the case of Ziyech, Havertz and Mount, all three favor playing as a central attacking midfielder, while Werner has spent most of his career as a forward.
Additionally, this season’s tight schedule makes team depth vital for any team looking to compete on multiple fronts.
