Tony Cascarino believes that Chelsea striker Timo Werner needs a great center forward next to him, while also suggesting that Christian Pulisic needs to play ahead of him on the left side.
Werner shone at RB Leipzig before his big move to Chelsea in the summer, but the German international is now struggling despite having a brilliant start to his life at Stamford Bridge.
It’s clear that something needs to change in this Chelsea setup, and Cascarino believes that Frank Lampard may need to change things.
Werner has been singled out for not being good enough to lead the line on his own, while Cascarino also argued that Pulisic is a better option than him in a wide left role.
Speaking in talkSPORT, the expert stated his belief that the Blues could use a forward like Emile Heskey to join Werner, comparing the 24-year-old to former Liverpool and England star Michael Owen, who often benefited from having a big man next to him attack.
“It’s complicated, because I’ve seen Werner a lot and when he was in Leipzig he played alongside Poulsen, who is a great center forward, he played on the left and prospered,” he said.
“He’s a bit like Michael Owen; Michael Owen without Emile Heskey would never be the same player.
Michael was incredibly fast but he didn’t have the greatest touch, but he always shot goals when he had a big boy by his side to take the pressure off.
“Werner is exactly the same for me; He’s tremendously fast, his touch isn’t exceptional, he’s not technically bad but he’s not great either… he can’t play center forward on his own.
“He just can’t, because he can’t lead a line or put players in play. You have to play with someone’s left side.
“The surprising thing for me in the change was when Giroud came out [against Villa]You have to play Tammy Abraham if you’re going to play Werner, because he has to play on the left side.
“The problem with Frank is that [Christian] Pulisic was probably Chelsea’s most dangerous striker and he looked very upbeat and always wanted to get on the left. Pulisic is a better left-handed player than Werner in the way Chelsea plays.
“It’s one of the biggest challenges Frank has in the upcoming games.”
