A selection of Chelsea fans on Twitter were delighted by Olivier Giroud’s performance during the club’s 1-0 win over Atlético Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 last night.
The Blues entered the game after an eight-game winning streak and dominated first-half procedures without creating clear scoring opportunities.
The trend was fairly similar after the break until a sublime aerial kick from Giroud gave them the lead in the 68th minute.
Initially, the Frenchman was considered offside and seemed the case from the side angle.
However, after an extensive review by the Video Assistant Referee, it was seen that Atlético defender Mario Hermoso made a poor clearance on the Frenchman’s path and the goal was valid.
The Blues held the victory comfortably when Diego Simeone’s team failed to register a shot on goal at the National Arena in Bucharest, which was their home stadium that night.
Giroud has been in sublime form in the Champions League this season, recording six goals in five appearances, only two of them as a starter.
His performance against Atlético pleased several of the club’s faithful and this is how some of them reacted on Twitter.
Reactions on Twitter:

We were so good. They were absolutely awful and parked the bus from minute 1. We deserved the goal and Giroud was incredible. The defenders had class and the midfield completely dominated them. Mendy trembled again.

Giroud’s contract should be extended. The boy is amazing. Our only reliable forward

Giroud scored her 11th goal of the season Tuesday night and is just one behind Tammy Abraham, who is the club’s top scorer this season.
He has been in and out of the starting lineup this period, but has still impressed with an average of 91 minutes per goal for the Blues.
The 34-year-old has already scored in back-to-back games for the west side of London and should be looking forward to starting against Manchester United in the league this weekend.
