Although they have only lost one game this season in the Scottish Premiership, Celtic are already behind their fiercest rivals, the Rangers, by a whopping 13 points.

Steven Gerrard’s team has hit all the right notes so far, and barring a monumental collapse it will break Celtic’s dominance over the national title.

If Neil Lennon’s team can come back and do 10 in a row, it will surely be one of his greatest managerial accomplishments.

However, its current form would suggest otherwise, particularly in the Europa League.

The Scottish champions are already out of the competition, having won just one point from their five matches played, before their last group match against Lille on Thursday.

Such a poor performance in 2020/21 has seen fans demand that Lennon be replaced, but the Celtic board has issued an unequivocal statement on the club official website. It reads:

In light of the ongoing speculation regarding the position of our football manager, Neil Lennon, the Celtic Football Club Board of Directors wishes to make clear its continued support for Neil and his backroom team.

The Board recognizes and understands the importance of winning the league championship this season and that, as Neil himself has made clear, recent performances and results have been disappointing. The Board is committed to the success of Celtic fans.

The Board has carefully considered the current circumstances and the challenges we face, not forgetting the pressure on management and players to achieve the 10th consecutive championship that is so important to all of us. Just as important is to continue operating in accordance with the values of our Club. The Board has concluded that our collective goal is best served if we continue to support Neil and his team in their search for solutions to those challenges.

Neil has the support of the players and the Club staff. Understand pressure and environment. As his outstanding record as a coach, captain and player demonstrates, he knows what it takes to be successful at Celtic and has achieved success with many of today’s players, who understand his method and approach.

While it has been suggested that it is time for a change, at this stage of the season, the Board believes that Neil and his management team are in the best position to change the team’s performances and lead us to success. The Board continues to work closely with Neil and his team to support them in their quest and will review progress in the new year.

The Board would like to take this opportunity to thank all Celtic fans for their support during this challenging year. The support response to the challenges we all face together has been magnificent. It is therefore important to make clear that the Board has never, as has been inaccurately reported, referred to any Celtic supporter as “authorized”.

The Board recognizes the variety of views expressed by our supporters and the strength of those views. While there may not always be an agreement, there is certainly a common goal, the success of Celtic Football Club, and we will continue to work together to pursue that success.

Whether this is the dreaded ‘vote of confidence’ or not, it appears Lennon will remain in his place at least for the foreseeable future.

With the transfer window just around the corner, it would make sense for Celtic to change coaches beforehand, if the results continue in the same vain, or at the end of the season.
