Celtic have endured a turbulent 2020/21 season and will almost certainly end their arch rivals, the Rangers, lifting the Premiership trophy. An inconsistent form has driven a gigantic 21-point gap between the reigning champions and their bitter neighbors.
The focus now shifts to next season, in which the Hoops will return with a vengeance and hunger to regain their crown. But to do this, they must recruit smartly in the transfer window.
Should Celtic sign Taiwo Awoniyi?
One man who would be a great addition to the team is Jan Target Taiwo Awoniyi. The forward would not only bolster Neil Lennon’s attacking options, he would hurt the Rangers, who are also keeping an eye on him.
Celtic can punish Rangers with Awoniyi swoop
As it stands, the Bhoys are doing everything they can to end their troublesome situation with Odsonne Edouard. The Frenchman is one of his key players, but he is approaching the last 18 months of his current contract. Football Insider reports that the club has slashed its asking price to make sure Edouard doesn’t go free next year.
Yes, or more likely when he leaves, Celtic will need to replace their raw talent and finesse in front of goal. Awoniyi is in disgrace at Liverpool and currently serves in the Bundesliga. He has notched five league goals and two assists for the Union Berlin loan team so far, more than Leigh Griffiths’s account of four goals and one assist in the Premiership.
Not only would Awoniyi be a welcome asset to Celtic’s attack, but the Rangers would be disappointed to miss out on his signature.
According to 90min, Liverpool would be seeking a fee of around £ 5 million for the Nigerian youth international. While this is a relatively high fee for a Premiership team to consider, Gers would arguably be in the driver’s seat after taking home the league title.
Celtic must strengthen their own assets if they want to regain their glory, but they must also nullify the chances of their rivals from another season out of control. Catching a player the Rangers like would be a very slick move from Nick Hammond and his entourage.
