Tammy Abraham has lost the opportunity to impress new manager Thomas Tuchel after being injured in Chelsea’s clash with Newcastle.
The English striker got a chance to start after Tuchel was impressed with his performance against Barnsley in the FA Cup, but his evening lasted just 20 minutes.
After falling with an ankle problem, Abraham, Chelsea’s top scorer this season with 12 goals, was treated on the field but was unable to continue and was replaced by Olivier Giroud.
What happened to Abraham at Stamford Bridge?
Abraham went looking for a direct pass, but retreating Jamaal Lascelles rallied to make an excellent save.
In doing the challenge, Lascelles received the ball but caught Abraham with his follow-up.
After having been on the stretch, Abraham fell awkwardly and immediately grabbed his ankle and looked in pain.
He remained on the ground for some time before receiving treatment, eventually limping to be replaced by Giroud.
The severity of the injury is not yet known.
Form of Abraham
The forward maintained his place in the starting eleven after scoring the game-winning goal against Barnsley last week.
But aside from goals in the cup, he scored a hat-trick against Luton, his closet has been empty since he scored three goals on either side of Christmas.
His absence will give Giroud a chance, but it’s not a long-term option for Tuchel.
Chelsea’s busy list of matches
In what is a condensed season due to the late start, Chelsea have a host of games on the horizon.
The Blues are in the second week of action of the Champions League, so they will face Atlético de Madrid in two games on February 23 and March 17. They also have Premier League matches with Southampton and Manchester United before the end of February.
