Marcelo Bielsa explained how a tactical observation from Southampton defenders allowed Leeds star Raphinha to shine against the Saints.
Leeds moved to the upper half of the table with a 3-0 win over the Saints at Elland Road. The Whites scored three times after the break to claim their first win in three games.
Brazilian striker Raphinha was the point man, tormenting Southampton’s defenders at all times and scoring the third goal with a free kick.
It was another fantastic display from the 24-year-old, who has been linked to Liverpool and Manchester United lately.
Usually a right winger starred from the left against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side. And Bielsa explained why he was deployed away from his natural position.
“They had two different types of defenses,” he told Sky Sports. “The right back didn’t attack, he defended. The left back attacked more but defended less.
“So, we were alternating between Raphinha, [Jack] Harrison and Helder [Costa] to see which one was better suited to what was happening on both sides.
“In the second half, as we scored fast, Raphinha had a better chance of getting behind.”
Raphinha’s goal was her fifth goal in the Premier League, meaning she now has 10 goal contributions in total.
Bielsa clarifies the position of the contract
Much has been said in recent days about whether Bielsa he will continue to be in charge at Elland Road next quarter.
The Argentine coach will be out of contract at the end of the season. Although he spoke enthusiastically of his relationship with the club, he fell short of committing to Leeds when asked about his plans earlier this week.
He added that he would not think of leaving West Yorkshire until he finished his job in Leeds.
When asked to clarify what he meant by that, he said: “I just wanted to reflect that with a third of the league still to play, many games can be confusing and perhaps influence final decisions.
“But in no way do I want to position myself in an advantageous position with the club. Because if the club offers me an extension and I delay it, it would seem that the club is more interested in me than I am. That is not the case. “
The well traveled coach has become a revered figure in Leeds after taking them back to the Premier League. And after impressing on their return, they can safely prepare for a second season at the top flight, while a European spot is not out of the question either.
