A 10-man Corinthians moved one step closer to securing their place in the Copa Libertadores knockout phase, playing a 1-1 draw with Boca Juniors on Tuesday.

A draw at Bombonera means that Timao maintained their one-point lead over Boca in Group E at eight points. Deportivo Cali and Always Ready sit on five and four points respectively, with their match on Thursday awaiting.

Corinthians made a bid to take the lead as a ball coming in on the right hand side left Du Queiroz completely alone with keeper Agustin Rossi, who made a spectacular block.

Dario Benedetto scored the equalizer on his birthday three minutes after the break, but Boca could barely break Corinthians down, even after the latter went down to ten men.

A long melee and stop after Victor Cantillo’s direct red thread also caused Corinthian’s coach Vitor Pereira to give his marching orders, but his team came up with an important point.

The Flamengo coast until the last 16

Flamengo reserved their place in the knockout phase and secured a comfortable 3-0 victory at home to Universidad Catolica.

The Rubro negro hit the lead in just the seventh minute when Willian Arao headed Giorgian de Arrascaeta’s corner kick home. Everton Ribeiro doubled the margin six minutes from the break.

Pedro rounded off the scoring with a fine solo finish in the final minute of regular time and secured the fourth win from five games and a five-point margin at the top of Group H.

Students also ensure progress

Estudiantes also confirmed the passage to the last 16 on Tuesday, claiming a 1-0 away win over RB Bragantino in second place.

Gustavo del Prete’s marvelous improvisation in the 77th minute finally proved the difference between the two sides in what was otherwise a closely contested match with small clear chances.

While Estudiantes moved to 13 points from five games, Bragantino’s second place remains within touching distance of Nacional and Velez Sarsfield, who play on Wednesday.
