Manchester City center-back Eric García has reached an ‘agreement’ to join Barcelona on a free transfer in 2021, but the contract cannot be signed and finalized until the Catalan giants elect their new president.
García is a product of the esteemed La Masia academy in Barcelona, but left his homeland to join Manchester City when he was 16 years old.
He had a sustained streak in City’s first team after restarting the project and is highly respected at the club. However, Pep Guardiola revealed in August that Garcia had turned down the opportunity to extend his contract with City.
The 19-year-old’s contract at Etihad expires in the summer of 2021, and he has long been linked with a return to Catalonia, either for a fee or free.
According to journalist Fabrizio RomanoGarcia has reached a ‘full agreement’ to join Barcelona in 2021, with personal terms agreed for a five-year contract.
The Spanish international could rejoin Barcelona in January, however this would first require negotiations with Manchester City.
Although the agreements are in force, a contract has not yet been signed, and this will not be the case until after the presidential elections in Barcelona. The successor of Josep Maria Bartomeu will be voted on on January 24, 2021.
The identity of Barcelona’s incoming president is the only obstacle for Garcia to return to his childhood club and step over the line, with a shift in vision and future planning from the successful candidate to a potential pitfall.
Garcia spent nine years in Barcelona’s youth system before moving to Manchester City in 2017. He has made 30 first-team appearances for Pep Guardiola’s team, but has largely been limited to a small part this season, starting only twice in the Premier. League.
