Barcelona have moved one step closer to snatching Chelsea’s “icon” Cesar Azpilicueta, and owner Roman Abramovich has intervened to ensure his expulsion is “magnificent”, according to a report.

One area of Chelsea’s squad to keep a close eye on in the coming windows is the central defense. Thomas Tuchel’s back squad has received great acclaim after supporting their march towards the Champions League glory last season.

Despite a recent shot in the league, the Blues can still boast of the common worst defense along with Manchester City this season with just nine conceded goals.

However, Antonio Rudiger, Thiago Silva, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta are all without a contract next summer.

Few would be surprised to see the Silva pen be extended by one year. The Brazilian has been a revelation since his free agent change from PSG in 2020.

Tuchel has allegedly given Christensen a contract ultimatum. The German thinks Christensen is a “perfect fit” for Chelsea, although reports have suggested he is reluctant to commit in the long term.

Rudiger has made strong connections with overseas sides after his the latest contract offer was reportedly treated as a ‘slap in the face’.

Finally, Azpilicueta has become a target for Barcelona, and the latest report from Spanish publication El Nacional makes grim reading for Chelsea.

Azpilicueta exit ‘advanced’; Abramovich prepares ‘goodbye’

They say Barca president Joan Laporta will ‘obey Xavi’s requests’ to land the 32-year-old defender. The lack of a transfer fee involved will allow Barcelona to concentrate their scarce resources on attacks. Outlet claims that negotiations are already at an “advanced” stage.

Azpilicueta has sat on the bench more times than he has been used to this season. Nevertheless, his experience and versatility ensure that he remains an important cog in Tuchel’s backline.

And to indicate how high he is thought of at Stamford Bridge, the article claims that Roman Abramovich ‘is preparing a farewell with grandeur’.

The current campaign is Azpilicuetas 10th in the capital, and Abramovich reportedly considers him ‘one of the most important footballers in the club’s history’.

Nevertheless, if the report is correct, it looks like Azpilicueta is now on his way back to his home country.

“You can not do this” – Tuchel reflects on Hammer’s loss

In the meantime Tuchel insisted that “you can not do that” when he lamented one aspect of their narrow London derby defeat to West Ham.

“We would like to [finish it off], but we could not end it with clear chances and be more ruthless. We also had a hard time defending ourselves in some situations, ”said the manager.

“When Thiago cleared the ball on the line, it was right after our goal and we have a terrible pass left in the feet of the opponents. You can not do this at this level, this is top-four Premier League level.

“Too many mistakes, it’s impossible to make so many mistakes and expect a result.”

On the title stroke, he added: “Every loss is a bump in the road that will not hold us back from what we demand of us. We need to play more accurately, more stably and reduce big mistakes.

Chelsea return to action on Wednesday when they face Zenit St. Petersburg in the Champions League.
