The Cleveland Browns have all their eggs in Deshaun Watson’s basket. Baker Mayfield can make things very uncomfortable if he chooses to.
All Baker Mayfield has to do is show up.
The Browns have yet to swap their previous No. 1 overall pick, in part because the same trading partners would prefer Cleveland to pick up the majority of his remaining contract. The Browns do not seem to intend to do that, so they play the waiting game.
So far, Mayfield has been fine with that. It’s not even training camp season. But the further this saga goes, the more Cleveland is in danger of Mayfield’s anxiety. And honestly, he would be right in being a little angry at this point.
Browns: Could Baker Mayfield Accelerate Trade Negotiations?
could he? Of course, there is always a potential. But it seems the Browns have reached out to Mayfield’s camp to find him the right trading partner. And so far, Mayfield’s best option is to wait, instead of forcing Cleveland to give him to e.g. Carolina for a pile of trash.
There is also always the potential for Cleveland to cut Mayfield down if they can not find a trading partner or deal they consider acceptable. Should that happen, Baker would then be able to choose his next home instead of going where Andrew Berry prefers to send him.
Mayfield owes nothing to the Browns – it’s an important thought to turn off. He has given Cleveland everything since he was drafted No. 1 overall back in 2018. Although the Browns believe they can do better with Watson, there is a chance he will not even play this season as he stands facing an ongoing civil lawsuit.
Cleveland’s backup plan is not even Mayfield. They signed Jacoby Brissett just in case Watson is suspended in the long run.
Wherever Baker looks up next time, the Browns owe him gratitude – not just for playing through injuries, but for avoiding the awkwardness that usually accompanies this kind of unwarranted split.
