Atlético de Madrid consolidated the top spot in LaLiga with a 1-0 home win over Getafe on Wednesday in manager Diego Simeone’s 500th game in charge of all competitions.
Simeone’s milestone came against his favorite opponents, having won 16 of the 18 matches against neighboring Getafe without conceding, the other two were goalless draws.
Luis Suárez put Atleti in front with his eighth goal in his first 11 league games for the club, equaling Radamel Falcao’s record as the most prolific rojiblancos of this century.
Atleti couldn’t add more to their account, but stayed safe to get three points away from Real Madrid, who have played one more game and are in action against Elche later on Wednesday.
The visitors were given a pass in the 14th minute when Thomas Lemar fired an angled shot into the goal frame while trying to catch Rubén Yáñez.
But Getafe, who ended an 11-game wait to win the league as a visitor the last time in their travels, couldn’t hold out much longer as Suarez watched the delivery of Yannick Carrasco.
Suarez took the lead from 15 yards shortly after, but a bigger opportunity was begging for Angel Rodriguez at the other end, the forward headed straight for Jan Oblak from close up.
Oblak was called into action again just before time to avoid Jaime Mata’s header with a routine save, while Carrasco was thwarted by Yáñez in a second half of minimal chances.
