Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Arsenal could sign a new goalkeeper this month, but was coy about the future of Runar Alex Runarsson.
Arsenal signed Runarsson in the summer transfer window to provide competition for Bernd Leno. The departure of Emiliano Martínez to Aston Villa meant the need for a new goalkeeper.
Eventually they brought in Runarsson, but they were also linked with several other shooting blocks. David Raya from Brentford was a target before signing a contract extension with the championship club, for example.
Arsenal may be regretting losing him, as Runarsson has struggled to impress. For example, made a big mistake in the Carabao Cup loss to Manchester City in December.
He suggested that Arsenal might have to look for another reinforcement elsewhere to keep Leno on their toes as number one.
And speaking at a press conference ahead of their match against Crystal Palace on Thursday, coach Arteta admitted that Arsenal are likely to perform this month.
He said: “We are evaluating the situation with the three positions in the goal area and we will find a different solution, probably in this window.”
Arteta also suggested that the Gunners couldn’t do what they “really wanted” in terms of their goalkeeping situation in the summer.
Therefore, there are already doubts about Runarsson’s future at the club. There have been rumors that he could be loaned in January.
Arteta, however, revealed little about that situation.
He said, “There is nothing yet.
“We are evaluating what will happen to the three positions.
“The discussion we had in the summer within the club is a bit different than what really happened due to the transfer window and the situation that developed with Emi.
“We didn’t have much time to do what we really wanted to do and we decided to assess the situation in this window which is what we are trying to do and we will make a decision on how we want to advance in those three positions.”
Arteta hopes to make Arsenal a success
Another player who has had trouble meeting expectations since joining Arsenal has been Nicolás Pepe.
The forward was his record signing when he joined in 2019, but he has not justified his high price.
Arteta, however, he thinks he can help Pepe.
He said, “We need to help you (succeed). To do that, you need minutes, you need consistency on the team. When you have that, you need to show that you are capable of it.
“Let’s see how the next few months unfold.”

Arteta is determined to support Pepe and has asked for extreme patience.
He added: “I think it is difficult to judge some players who have not played many minutes in the last two or three weeks. To throw them away and hope they are the best player on the field. [is hard].
“I don’t think it will happen and Nico tried. He tried the whole game and had great moments. Moments when he could have scored two or three goals.
“In a normal circumstance and with his ability in those positions, he puts the ball in the back of the net. He didn’t, but I think his overall contribution was good. “
