Arsenal center-back David Luiz is expected to be offered the opportunity to extend his stay at Emirates Stadium with a new contract.
The 33-year-old has entered the last six months of his contract with the Gunners and faces an uncertain future. Luiz has been in and out of the team this season, and it’s safe to say that he has divided opinions with his performances on the field.
After serving a suspension for an early red card in the 2-1 loss to the Wolves, Luiz impressed in Sunday’s 4-2 win over Leeds, forcing his way back to the side at the expense of Rob Holding, and The independent Claim manager Mikel Arteta still feels that Luiz has a lot to offer the club.
In addition to Luiz’s impact on the pitch, much of Arteta’s affection for the Brazilian is his role as a mentor in Arsenal’s youth.
The team is full of rising stars like Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe and Gabriel Martinelli, and it is understood that those young players look up to Luiz, who has earned a lot of credit for his desire to support the young.
Arsenal’s policy is normally to offer one-year contracts to players over the age of 30, although the Gunners have objected to that in the recent past. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 31, signed until 2023 last year, while Willian, 32, received a three-year contract following his departure from Chelsea last summer.
Arteta does not care about the details of the contracts, although he has urged the club’s leaders to contact Luiz and reach an agreement before he agrees to move elsewhere.
Currently, the Brazilian is free to discuss a contract with any foreign team before a possible departure from the Emirates in the summer, and Arteta wants to avoid losing the most experienced player on his team.
It’s news that is likely to divide Arsenal’s fan base. Luiz’s quality is evident, but so is his penchant for disaster.
Known for his regular lapses of concentration, many fans are eager to stop being a winning defender, especially since Arsenal have some younger talents competing for the minute.
His compatriot Gabriel Magalhaes seems destined to be a fundamental part of the Gunners’ future, while Rob Holding was recently tied to his own new arrangement, and there is also the little matter of William Saliba’s future to deal with.
The 19-year-old, who is now on loan to Nice, has not spoken well of Arteta or Arsenal since his return to France, but it is believed that the club’s leaders still see the teenager as a potential star of their future.
