Arsenal believe Atletico Madrid are sabotaging Lucas Torreira’s transfer value by barely playing with him during his loan, according to reports in Spain.
Torreira joined Los Rojiblancos in October, with Thomas Partey moving in the other direction. Since he arrived, he has barely appeared, making just three starts in all competitions.
After Diego Simeone moved to 3-5-2 form two months ago, Torreira found himself behind players like Koke, Héctor Herrera and Geoffrey Kondogbia in November in the pecking order, the latter of whom Atlético received a waiver. Special for signing outside of the transfer window after Partey’s departure.
According to Liberta Digital, his lack of playing time is starting to frustrate his parent club. There was no call option clause included in Torreira’s loan agreement and the report suggests that Atleti is trying to reduce the player’s value.
Besides having potential benefits if they decide to make the move permanent in the summer, there could be another reason for Simeone’s dastardly plan. It is well known that El Cholo was furious when Arsenal activated the termination clause of the Match at the last minute, so Atleti may be dishing out revenge (quite expensive).
The Gunners are reportedly willing to “take action” if the situation persists, and Fiorentina is said to be interested in loaning the player. However, his agent recently insisted that he was willing to fight for his position at Atlético.
Simeone’s team has done very well despite Torreira’s limited involvement so far this season and is currently at the top of the table, having lost only once in La Liga. In addition, he has two games in hand over Real Madrid and could stretch his lead at the top to eight points if he wins both.
The rojiblancos are also in the round of 16 of the Champions League, where they will face Chelsea in February.
