Former Arsenal star Kevin Campbell has made the rather bold prediction that forward Nicolas Pepe still has a great future at the club despite his recent troubles.
The Ivory Coast international was a club record signing for Arsenal from Lille in the summer of 2019, costing £ 72m, he reported. BBC Sport at the time.
However, Pepe has struggled at Arsenal, and many fans will now wonder if signing him was really the right decision after just one really eye-catching campaign in Ligue 1.
A recent report from Daily star suggested that Arsenal might already be considering letting Pepe go, but former Gunner Campbell doesn’t support that idea.
Talking to Football InsiderThe former striker has expressed his conviction that the signing of Pepe was not a mistake and hopes that he will change things for himself at the Emirates Stadium, with Mikel Arteta willing to continue working with him.
“I don’t think they made a mistake in their signing at all,” Campbell said.
“Mikel Arteta wants to work with him. I think he has a great future at the club because he is a very talented player.
“He has done some things that were not quite right, one of them was the expulsion in Leeds. He is suffering right now because he cannot help the team in the Premier League but he will come back better.
“Hopefully, everything will be fine when I get back.”
We’re not sure that most Arsenal fans share Campbell’s optimism, but of course they’ll hope he’s right.
