Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane had to lament a useless display from Los Blancos as the defending champions lost two points in LaLiga.

Madrid drew 1-1 at Elche on Wednesday, with a Fidel penalty that annulled Luka Modric’s first goal in the 20th minute.

Modric scored his first header after 26 goals and 364 appearances in all competitions for Madrid.

LaLiga champion Madrid put together 14 attempts, driving six on goal, and substitute Eden Hazard squandered an opportunity at the end – the Spanish giants have hit wood 18 times in all competitions this season, more than any other club in the five main European leagues.

The draw, combined with Atlético de Madrid’s previous victory over Getafe, leaves Zidane’s team two points behind their rivals in the city.

The athletes also have two games in hand, but Zidane insisted that there will still be many twists and turns in the title race.

“The season is very long, there is a lot to do,” Zidane told Movistar. “All teams are going to lose points.

“We have to continue with our business, keep fighting, we are going to lose points and that is why we have to continue.

“We come from many good games, with good results, today there was a break but we have to continue.

“We have had chances to kill the game, but that’s right, when they scored the goal, they came back and it was very difficult.

“Before we had chances to score the second, we didn’t have them and this is football.”

Madrid had won five straight LaLiga games heading into Wednesday’s game, although Zidane doesn’t think his team has shown complacency or overconfidence.

“I don’t think so because we knew what was at stake today,” he added.

“They are three important points in a complicated field. But when they tied level it was more complicated. We have also had occasions but it has not been possible ”.
