They may not have gotten away with anything Friday night, but Aston Villa’s stock continues to rise.

Dean Smith’s side have been a revelation in the Premier League this season and barring a very controversial VAR call, they would surely have left Old Trafford with at least one point in their clash against Manchester United.

And one man who is proving why he could be said to be Smith’s anonymous hero is Matty Cash.

Is Matty Cash Villa’s best summer signing?

The man signed from Nottingham Forest this summer has given Villa an extra dimension on the right side, with his energy and dynamism wreaking havoc.

Against United, he produced another standout display.

According Couch score, won 78% of his total games on the night, and made three tackles and three punts as well.

But it wasn’t just his defensive work that was impressive. His forward forays were a vital attacking weapon for Villa, both in dead ball situations and when crossing from deep.

He provided three key passes (only Jack Grealish had more with four), sent three accurate crosses (a team high) and also had two shots on goal.

His offensive intent led Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell to say that it was “dangerous”, while Luis Miguel Echegaray of CBS Sports said that both he and his summer signing partner, Emiliano Martínez, “continue to shine.”

The right back is not the most glamorous position on the field. But the quality that Cash has brought to the table, both on offense and defense, has been second to none for Villa.

He’s already become Mr Reliable for Smith, and at just 23 years old, he has all the tools in his locker to be one of the best full-backs in the Premier League.
