The Dallas Cowboys have the 24th pick in the first round of the NFL Draft, and those five players would be excellent choices in that slot.
A critical low season awaits the Dallas Cowboys, who face tremendous pressure to win now in an NFC that has become more open since Tom Brady retired. The Cowboys have not reached the NFC Championship Game since 1996, despite having put together an extremely talented roster for nearly two decades, increasing the stakes for Jerry Jones as he works to solve Dallas’ offseason problems.
The good news for the Cowboys is that there are a number of players who should be available with the 24th pick in the draft, who can step in as Day 1 starters on a playoff team. Here are five potential goals for the Cowboys in Round 1, starting with a potential replacement for Dalton Schultz.
5. Players, Dallas Cowboys should draft in Round 1 – Trey McBride
Dallas has some pay cap issues that could prevent them from retaining Schultz, who will be one of the most coveted tight-ends in the free agent market. The dropout from Schultz to Blake Jarwin is dramatic and could hurt the Cowboys’ attack, making the choice of McBride as No. 24 a wise choice if Schultz goes.
McBride is the undisputed top-tight-end prospect of the draft from Colorado State and has received rave reviews for his ability to be a matchup nightmare in the passing game. It’s also reassuring that McBride is a block above average, which would help the Cowboys replace an underrated portion of Schultz’s play.
The No. 24 pick appears to be at the high end of McBride’s draft share, so this is an option Dallas could consider if some of their higher-priority goals fall on the field. Jones could also choose to swap a bit back to secure McBride’s services, while also landing some more pull capital to improve the Cowboys’ depth down the line.
