The Steelers want to find a new starting quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft, but Pittsburgh should avoid the temptation to search for an imperfect prospect.

It’s an open secret that the Steelers desperately want to land a new starting quarterback in this year’s NFL Draft. The problem is that their overall number 20 in round 1 does not fit well to secure value on the game’s main position.

A trade up to Round 1 remains the most cautious option for Pittsburgh if they want to grab a first-class signal caller. If they stay at No. 20, they have to stick to their usual draft philosophy of choosing the best available player with only a slight emphasis on need.

That’s why the Steelers are not getting a quarterback before Round 7. Tomlin starts by catching an exciting talent to help catch passes from the one lining up in the middle for the Steelers next year.

Round 1: Drake London

London is just the kind of big receiver that seems to thrive in Pittsburgh’s attack. He is not a burner, but his 6-foot-5, 210-pound frame allows him to bully opposing defensive backs at the point of attack. Fans, however, should not ignore the outburst he shows on vertical routes.

The Steelers will like him because he has already proven his ability to run quality routes on the outside and in the castle. This versatility gives him a chance to make an immediate impact as a rookie as he grows into a quality No. 1 wide receiver along the line. Nabbing London would allow the Steelers to let JuJu Smith-Schuster go. It may not be a popular move among fans, but it’s the right approach for a franchise to turn the page.
